Rules:

  • NL Points calculation formula (per race*):
    • A skiers’ race DISTANCE [m] is divided by their TIME [s] to determine their SPEED [m/s].
    • A race BENCHMARK curve is calculated:
      • Only skiers who have participated in an NL Cup earlier in the season are included in the BENCHMARK calculation. Participants without prior points are excluded.
      • A scatter plot is made of their SPEED [m/s] over the median of their prior points NLPL_PRIOR_MEDIAN [pts].
      • The BENCHMARK curve is fit through this scatter plot of the form y = (A*x^2) + (B*x) + 0.
        • where quadratic term A = BENCHMARK_QUADRATIC.
        • where linear term B = BENCHMARK_LINEAR.
        • where the intercept is forced through 0.
        • (In the first race of the season, since nobody has any prior points, BENCHMARK_LINEAR is set to 100 [pts] divided by the fastest skiers’ SPEED, and all other terms are set to 0)
      • A skiers NL Cup Points for the race, NLPL_RACE [pts], is determined by evaluating their SPEED [m/s] on the BENCHMARK curve.
        • NLPL_RACE = (BENCHMARK_QUADRATIC * SPEED^2) + (BENCHMARK_LINEAR * SPEED) + 0
  • The overall NL Points List is ranked by the total of a skiers’ best 4 races.
  • A skier must have 4 races to be eligible for awards.
  • Season awards will be given after the last NL Cup race.
  • The age group categories are:

  • Age is defined as the participants’ age on the Dec 31st occurring within the competition season.
  • Athletes who choose to race up to a higher category are still ranked within their year-of-birth age group category.

*Additional Rules (the fine print):

  • All categories (ages and genders) are combined when calculating the NL_POINTS; so long as the race consisted of (A) the same course, or (B) laps of the same course, or (C) similar course profiles. Where courses differed significantly, the race may be treated as {2, 3, …} different races for the purposes of points calculation.
  • Sprint races are scored using the qualifying times (not the final heats).
  • Team sprint races are scored using the sum of the qualifying and final leg times.
  • Extreme outliers may be excluded from the calculation of BENCHMARK {due to broken equipment, medical emergency, skiing really slowly with your kids, etc …}. If they occur, a note will be added on the “Individual Race Calculation” report.
  • NLPL_RACE is rounded to 1 decimal of precision at the time of calculation.
  • The PARA_SIT results are not used in the calculation of BENCHMARK (due to racing on a different course).
  • In the curve fitting calculation, weights are used of the form SPEED^2 (faster skiers are weighted more heavily than slower skiers).

NL Seeding List:

  • The NL Seeding List is similar to the NL Point List, but uses the median of all races from the previous 12 months (vs the sum of the best 4 races from the current season) and also includes major off-island races the XCNL team travels to. It is mainly used by NL Cup race organizers for seeding purposes.
