Pat Pike, current Pres. welcomed all after a bit of time to mingle, Mac Turner, past president and nominator, spoke of the highlights in the nomination document and then I on behalf of CCNL presented the certificate and added a few more words and anecdotes. I had brought smoked salmon from Springdale, cheese and crackers and all the other guests (unasked) brought other refreshments. Tea and coffee, an embroidered tablecloth, tulips made a fine spread. All the while Sonya, Allison and the youngest grandson were taking videos and photos, with warm smiles on their faces. Also, Club photographer and friend of Wally’s, Joe Brazil took numerous photos. Of course, there were ones of the presentation itself and they also arranged a group photo of the 4 Hall of Fame recipients in the club, me, Sonya, Heber and Wally. People mingled and shared stories and food until almost 9:00. The planned Club executive meeting got postponed until next week. Mac said this needed to be “Wally’s night”. The family was so obviously proud and pleased for the honour bestowed on their Dad and Wally’s face showed that he too was touched, humbled and grateful. Everyone was so pleased with the evening and gathering. Wally’s honour will be acknowledged again at a Club Volunteer Appreciation Event in early April where more people will be present.

Last night I had the privilege of attending the honouring of Wally Skinner, a long-time member and volunteer at the Pasadena Ski and Nature Park. Wally had recently been inducted into the Cross Country NL Hall of Fame. The story and life of this amazing, gentle and kind man is a tale best told by those who know him best so I will leave it to them. However as I was leaving the building I looked back and saw the golden glow emanating from the chalet. Many of the volunteers, friends and family were still there and I thought the glow could just as well have been from them, the dedication, kindness to one and all, the giving without measure, the friendship and yes love that they had for each other that was personified in Wally. If Pasadena is the Crown of the Valley then the Ski Park its members and especially those who volunteer their time are the jewels in the crown. I know all of this to be true because it is the kindness, support and friendship that I have found there that has helped me through a difficult time. Finally the snow in front of the chalet is carved from the skis of skiers who used the Park yesterday. To me it was like the Park was adding its signature to the night of recognition.
